Privacy Notice – Global Compendium on Cacao Research compiled by CacaoNet

This privacy notice tells you about the information we collect from you when you register to the website of the Global Network for Cacao Genetic Resources (CacaoNet) and provide data for the Global Compendium on Cacao Research. CacaoNet is coordinated by the Alliance of Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT). The objective of the Compendium is to compile information on institutions and their scientists involved in research on all aspects related to cocoa production, processing and consumption.


In collecting this information, we are acting as a data controller and, by law, we are required to provide you with information about us, about why and how we use your data, and about the rights you have over your data.

What personal data do we collect?

We collect personal data at the following 4 stages:

At the time of registration on the CacaoNet website, users are required to provide the following information:

  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • E-mail

At the time of creation of your researcher’s profile you will provide additional personal data including:

  • Telephone
  • Links (e.g. ResearchGate, Linkedin etc.)
  • Job title/function

When you will provide additional personal data affiliated to your research institution including:

  • Full name of institution
  • Acronym of institution
  • Country
  • City
  • Address
  • E-mail of institution
  • Website URL

When you will provide additional personal data affiliated to your research areas including, but not limited to:

  • Research areas
  • Research topics
  • Keywords
  • Additional information regarding your work

Why do we collect this information?

The objective of the Compendium is to compile information on institutions and their scientists involved in research on all aspects related to cocoa production, processing and consumption.By making this information accessible to all actors of the cocoa value chain, the Compendium aims to create a platform facilitating contact and exchanges between stakeholders to stimulate collaboration and investment in areas of priorities for research.

We ask for your consent to publish the information that you supply to us with on the registration form. The information will be publicly available to all visitors of the website.

We will only keep your data in our database for as long as you continue to consent.

What do we do with your information?

We use the information you provide to make it accessible through the Global Compendium on Cacao Research at 2 levels:

  • Individual level - your personal profile is made publicly accessible to communicate on your research activities and share your contact information with the community
  • Institutional level - your information is aggregated with that of other individuals.

We may use your personal information to generate statistics on cacao research at different levels (e.g. institutional, regional or by country).

How long do we keep your information for?

Your information is kept until you ask us to remove it from the CacaoNet database by sending an email to bioversity-ds-requests@cgiar.org.

Your rights over your information

By law, you can ask us what information we hold about you, and at any point you can ask us to correct it if it is inaccurate. You can modify or erase it yourself through your personal profile once logged in.

You can also ask us to stop using your information – the simplest way to do this is to withdraw your consent, which you can do at any time, by emailing or writing to us using the contact details above. 

Your right to complain

If you have a complaint about our use of your information, you can contact the Italian Data Protection authority at http://www.garanteprivacy.it/web/guest/home_en

Updates to this privacy policy

We regularly review and, if appropriate, update this privacy policy as our services and use of personal data evolves. If we want to make use of your personal data in a way that we haven’t previously identified, we will contact you to provide information about this and ask for your consent. 

We will update the version number and date of this document each time it is changed.
